Media: Fic
Title: Kings of the Sky
Artist: heartsasmagnets
Rating: G
Word Count: 2300
Summary: Blaine Anderson notices a sad and lonely boy on the playground and decides to spend recess with him.
Notes: This was written for (and beta'd by) the amazing colfer - the Kurt to my Blaine - who requested Little!Klaine fic last night, and I gladly, GLADLY obliged. I fully intended to write something short, simple and cute -- but THIS happened instead.

Like most six year-old boys, Blaine Anderson loves recess. In fact, it's his absolute favorite time of the day. Yes, he likes math and science and lunch – he really likes lunch, actually – but recess is his all-time, hands down favorite part of the school day. He loves the freedom of the wind blowing through his curls as he runs, usually away from the kid who's 'it' in the latest game of tag.

Everyone plays. Well, almost everyone. Everyone except Kurt Hummel. No, Kurt never plays tag or any other game. He just walks out to the playground at the prescribed time and slides through one of the triangular holes in the jungle gym, sits smack in middle of space the dome-shaped structure takes up, and reads. Sometimes, when a time-out is called, Blaine will catch Kurt looking over at him and the rest of the kids. But it's only for a second and his eyes quickly return to his book.

Lots of kids tease Kurt. He doesn't dress or act like them. They make fun of his fancy shirts and shoes. They laugh at him when they catch him singing to himself in the hallway. Blaine thinks it's stupid and they're being really, really mean; but they don't make fun of Blaine. They always want him to play tag and they invite him to sit with them at lunch. So, he doesn't tell them he thinks they're mean, because if he did, they'd probably tease him like they tease Kurt.

And Blaine really feels different than the other kids most of the time, so he doesn't want that to happen. School is incredibly easy for him, so he's bored most days. He's smart and he knows it. His mommy always says he's her smart, handsome boy. He doesn't think that girls have cooties like the other boys always say they do. In fact, he thinks the girls are really pretty – like his mommy – and they're usually the nicest to him. Even though Blaine has friends, he doesn't really like many of them.

Day after day, he watches Kurt walk outside and crawl inside his usual hiding place. He watches Kurt thinking hard in class, after he's finished the addition problems on the sheet on his own desk. More and more he finds himself drawn to the quiet boy under the jungle gym, drawn to wanting to be his friend.

So, one day Blaine shuffles his feet in the crunchy fallen autumn leaves and lags behind his classmates as they race down the hill to the playground. He simply ignores their loud voices as they call for him to hurry up because the game is starting. He watches Kurt – who is wearing a red bow tie and fancy red suspenders – settle into his usual place and he makes a choice. He's going to spend recess with Kurt Hummel.

Kurt doesn't even look up from his book as Blaine approaches, his tiny sneakers sinking into the multitude of loose pebbles that fill the play area. He hesitates slightly, not sure of the best way to get Kurt’s attention. He doesn't want to scare him or make him run away. If the other kids are laughing at Blaine for not playing with them, he doesn't hear it. He does hear Kurt's tiny voice humming a song he's heard somewhere before.

Suddenly, his worry melts away and he can't wait to talk to Kurt. Excitedly, he climbs part-way up the dome-shaped jungle gym and sticks his head down through one of the holes.

"Hey," he exclaims, as a floppy curl drops over his eye. "Can I play with you?"

"Me?" Kurt replies, craning his neck to look up and back at Blaine. He's so quiet Blaine can barely hear him, even though he's hanging less than a foot above him. "I'm reading."

"Whatcha reading?" Blaine asks, undeterred.

"James and the Giant Peach."

Blaine pushes the annoying curl out of his face so he can see Kurt better, even though Kurt has stopped looking at him. "Is it any good?"

"It's my favorite book."

"I don't really like to read," Blaine confesses. "Come climb with me."

Kurt frantically shakes his head and clutches his book.

"Why not?"

"I'm scared of high places," Kurt replies, looking up at Blaine again.

He swings through the bars and crashes down beside him, leaving a Blaine-sized dent in pebbles, and startling Kurt, who jumps more than a little bit.

"If I read with you today, will you climb with me tomorrow?"

"I can't," Kurt says, wistfully looking away.

"Why not?" He repeats.

"That big kid from second grade will hit me again. He said so."

Blaine bites at his lip. He knows the kid Kurt is talking about. He's chubby, taller than all the other kids and especially mean. Blaine swallows and shakes his head.

"He won't," he declares, matter-of-factly. Blaine's even smaller than Kurt, but he really wants to be Kurt's friend, so, if he has to face Dave, the second grade bully, then that's what he has to do. "I won't let him, okay?"

Kurt smiles just a little bit. Blaine can't ever remember seeing Kurt smile before. It makes him smile a little bit, too. Kurt nods his head this time.

"Now let's read," Blaine says, carefully sliding the book from Kurt's hands and lying down on his belly in the pebbles. Kurt mimics his posture, Blaine opens to the page Kurt's bookmark is holding, and begins to read out loud:

"There was no swing, no seesaw, no sandpit and no other children were ever invited to come up the hill and play with poor James. And as time went on, he became sadder and sadder and more lonely, and he used to spend hours every day standing at the bottom of the garden, gazing at the lovely but for – for –"

"Forbidden," Kurt offers. Even though Blaine’s smart, he's not a super good out-loud reader, so he appreciates the help.

"Lovely but forbidden worlds of woods and fields and oceans that were spread out below him like a magic carpet."

---

"I'm scared, Blaine," Kurt whimpers, the next day as they stand outside the rather enormous jungle gym, looking up. It hadn't looked so incredibly large until today. "Can't we just read?"

He doesn't know why Blaine suddenly decided to be his friend, but he kind of likes it. Even if climbing the jungle gym is the scariest thing he's ever thought about doing.

"Kurt, we made a deal," Blaine reminds him. "Besides, once you get up there, you'll be having so much fun you won't even want to come down."

"What if I fall?" Kurt hates falling, which usually involves skinning his knees and ripping his clothes. He shouldn't have worn the special gray pants his mommy picked out for him today.

"You won't," Blaine promises. "Just follow me."

With that, Blaine grabs onto the bars and begins to climb. He looks back at Kurt, who is petrified and hasn't moved an inch.

"Trust me."

Somehow he makes his feet move and he follows Blaine, bit by bit, all the way to the top of the dome. Blaine sits down and encourages him to do the same. His hands are shaky, but he manages to slowly, steadily lower himself onto the frame.

"Wow," Kurt says, looking around the playground. The view from up here is really, really neat. He can see the whole playground. All the kids playing tag and some girls doing double-dutch on the sidewalk – and Kurt thinks he might want to go over and ask if he can join them. Not today, but sometime.

He looks over and smiles at Blaine, who bumps his hand against Kurt's gently, returning the smile.

"Hey Hummel!" A familiar voice booms, cutting through his silent happiness. "Didn't I tell you I was gonna pound you if I saw you out of your cage?"

Kurt looks down from his perch at Dave, who doesn't seem so big when he's all the way down there.

"Freaks like you belong in cages!"

"He's not a freak!" Blaine yells back.

"I'll pummel you, too, Blaine Anderson. Stay out of this."

"Come up here and get us!" Kurt shouts down at Dave, surprising himself with his boldness.

Fear immediately grips his heart. He did not just yell at the biggest, meanest kid at Lima Elementary school, did he? But all that he can think of is his daddy telling him that no one pushes the Hummels around (something he's never believed or acted on until just this second) – and how he feels safe because his friend Blaine is with him.

Dave just kind of looks around and shuffles a little.

"See? He's too afraid to climb up here. You're safe," Blaine whispers excitedly. They beat the bully.

Kurt smiles widely, feeling like he's on top of the world. Literally. That is until big, mean, awful Dave spots his book underneath the jungle gym and a big, mean, awful smile covers his face. Snatching it off the ground, Dave holds it up.

"Hey freak! Shouldn't leave your precious book alone," he taunts before he rips the cover off and many pages thereafter.

"No!" Kurt shouts, nearly falling forward. Blaine pulls him back.

Dave throws the pieces and they land inside the jungle gym. When Dave is gone, Kurt climbs down and back inside, gathering up the tattered and torn parts of James and the Giant Peach. He sits there in the pebbles, tears rolling down his face, trying to put the pages back in order, willing the book to be whole again.

Blaine drops down, pressing a hand to Kurt's shoulder.

"I'm sorry, Kurt."

"Go away, Blaine," he screams, tears streaming now. "This is all your fault! I don't ever want to talk to you again."

He gathers up the last pieces as quickly as he can, slips out of one of the holes and runs as fast and as far from Blaine Anderson as he can.

---

Kurt doesn't talk to him for days. Which makes him really, really sad. He'd had fun climbing the jungle gym with Kurt until that horrible bully ruined everything. He wants to be Kurt's friend, but Kurt won't even look at him anymore.

Blaine still watches him in math class, smiling sadly at the funny faces Kurt makes when he's working really hard on a problem. Kurt returns to his home under the jungle gym; though he doesn't read, he just lays there looking up at the sky. Blaine returns to playing tag with his other friends, but it isn't fun anymore. Not even a little bit.

He goes home one night and begs and pleads his mommy to take him to the bookstore. She finally does and he combs the shelves looking for a book that looks just like Kurt's. At last, he finds it - a white cover with a giant peach and a smiling boy.

Kurt smiles like that. Or he did, once.

On the drive home, he bursts into tears, telling his mommy the story about the mean boy and his new friend Kurt and how he won't speak to him anymore. When they get home, she runs her soft hands through his curls and hugs him tightly. She promises that Kurt will forgive him. And Blaine knows that mommies never lie, so he feels a little bit better as he sniffles and wipes the big wet tears away with his sleeve.

That night, she helps him wrap the book in shiny red paper – just like the color of Kurt's suspenders.

---

Kurt studies the clouds. He thinks about how he wants to fly in an airplane. Maybe he could even be the pilot! He shivers a little. He overheard his daddy talking about snow last night, but right now the sky is still blue and the clouds still carefree and puffy.

"Kurt," a familiar voice breaks through his thoughts. "Kurt," it repeats.

It's Blaine. He feels his heart beat a little faster. He's supposed to be mad at Blaine, but he can't help but want to talk to him. He wants to be Blaine's friend. He sits up and Blaine slips inside and sits down, cross-legged, in front of him.

Blaine's hiding something behind his back.

"I'm really sorry, Kurt," he says, extending the red wrapped gift to him. Kurt takes it. "My mommy helped me wrap it."

Kurt rips the wrapping off and tosses it aside. There in his hands is a brand new book, just like the one the mean boy destroyed. He clutches it to his chest and he can't help the tears he's crying again, here underneath the jungle gym with Blaine.

"Please smile."

And Kurt does. Then, he throws his arms around Blaine – his best friend – and squeezes him tight.

"You wanna read it?" Blaine asks.

Kurt nods. "But not here."

He grabs Blaine's hand and pulls him outside the jungle gym. This time, Kurt leads the way as they climb to the top. They sit down together and Blaine places his hand on top of Kurt's, for just a moment, but it makes Kurt giddy with delight. They take turns reading paragraphs – he and Blaine.

He hasn't thought at all about what the rest of the playground is doing but as he looks out, he sees that things continue on as they always have. Except that now, Kurt (the saddest, loneliest little boy at Lima Elementary) has a best friend. He feels like he's on top of the world. Like he and Blaine are kings of the sky – and of the forbidden worlds of woods and fields and oceans.

I started crying when Kurt's book ripped, and then i didn't stop until the end.
grahh I have such mixed feelings about little!Klaine, half of the fics just make me roll my eyes and the other half just makes me tear up and want them to be kids and happy forever and CAN I JUST PROTECT THEM FROM THE CRUEL CRUEL WORLD
obvs your fic belongs to the latter.

Me too. ME. TOO. When she first gave it to me to read I was all teary-eyed up to that point anyway and that line just pulled this weird CHOKING sound out of me and I was bawling for the rest of it.
