Title: The Moment
Word Count: 563
Rating: PG
Pairing: Blaine/Kurt (Blaine's POV)
Synopsis: What Blaine realizes when he comes to McKinley to confront Karofsky.

The moment Kurt stepped in and pushed Karofsky away was the moment Blaine knew that he and Kurt would be more than friends.

Yes, it was a sign of Kurt coming into his own as a confident, open man who wouldn’t take any crap from anyone (which Blaine took just a little pride in helping him with), but it also seemed that it was a demonstration of how much Kurt already cared for him - even though they’d known each other just a few days.

Blaine had offered to come to McKinley after a shaky and distraught looking Kurt had showed up at his front door. They’d been exchanging texts for the better part of an hour before that, and even over text, Blaine could tell something was wrong. He’d texted Kurt his address, but he hadn’t fully prepared himself for the fact that his protective feelings for Kurt could result in the threat of bodily harm.

He managed to keep a cool exterior, but inside he was most definitely afraid of getting pummeled on public school turf. After all, unlike Kurt, Blaine had run away from his bullies. Blaine had promised Kurt that he had his back on this, but Kurt was not required to make any reciprocal oaths. The fact that he did it voluntarily meant more to Blaine than he could put into words.

It meant that their relationship wouldn’t be one-sided for long. Blaine wouldn’t always be the one doing the encouraging and protecting. They were in this together.

As Karofsky stomped off, Blaine noticed a familiar sadness overtake Kurt. The time for brave faces was over. They were alone again and Kurt sat down on the nearby steps.

“What’s going on? Why are you so upset?” Blaine asked, sitting down beside him.

“Because, up until yesterday, I had never been kissed – or at least, one that counted,” Kurt replied, pretty obviously holding back tears.

Blaine would have liked to kiss him right there, to show him how a kiss should feel and give him the first kiss he deserved to have from someone who knew who and what they wanted in life – but he didn’t. He knew, no matter how well-intentioned, that it would probably just feel like another violation to Kurt and he didn’t want their first kiss to feel that way. He wanted their first kiss to be perfect.

He pursed his lips, unable to think of anything to say to make Kurt feel better. Nothing could give Kurt back what was taken from him, but he decided right there that he would be the good in Kurt’s life and do whatever he could to outweigh the bad things.

“Come on, I’ll buy you lunch.”

As they ate, Blaine watched the sadness leave Kurt, like a weight lifted off his back. Kurt laughed at a passing comment, and Blaine noted that he once again looked like the bright-eyed, vibrant young spy he’d met in the halls of Dalton, the adorable guy he’d sort of unintentionally sung a song to (backed by his fellow Warblers), and the brave young man who would eventually become his boyfriend.

Though their first kiss wouldn’t be for a few more weeks, it was there on the steps of McKinley High – as he was about to get taken down by a burly football player – that Blaine realized that Kurt was worth it.

Very nice. C: Was very sweet and touching in its own way. Thanks so much for sharing!

I really like the fact that you touched on the fact that while Blaine has a very confident demeanor, there still could be those underlying doubts and fears with him that we haven't seen yet. Makes Kurt and Blaine compliment each other even more. ;3

Oh Blaine...*happysigh* Yes. This is excellent - I really like seeing both Blaine's inner panic about getting hurt, but also that he recognizes Kurt's reaction for what it is. A sign of how much he cares and how strong he can be. :)

Thanks for sharing this! :)

"...and the brave young man who would eventually become his boyfriend."

Oh, yes. I can feel you closing the net around them even if they don't know it yet. Seeing Blaine see Kurt is a great narrative move; and you accomplish it so well in such a short space!
