Title: The Lie
Word Count: ~ 1,300
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Blaine/Kurt (Blaine's POV)
Synopsis: Based on this prompt: Blaine really hasn't read Patti LuPone's new book - he just said yes because he didn't want to disappoint Kurt. He buys and starts reading it so Kurt doesn't catch him in the lie.

As a general rule, Blaine hated lying. Firstly, because it almost always resulted in hurting someone; and secondly, because he sucked at it.

Blaine lied to Kurt.

He had - in fact - not read Patti LuPone's memoir. He'd only narrowly escaped being caught in his fib by acting super excited and just letting Kurt gush. He'd found that was usually best anyway. It was his personal opinion that Kurt was at his most adorable when he rambled about something he loved, so Blaine was more than happy to just take it all in.

But, he'd lied and he couldn't have it on his conscience.

Plus, he didn't want Kurt to bring it up again at greater length only to have Kurt discover he could not converse about it fluently. On the way to Dalton the next day, he ducked into the nearest bookstore he could find and plucked a copy from the shelf. The look the clerk gave him was typical. He simply shook his head, sighed and pushed out the door, dreaming of the day when a smartly-dressed prep school boy could buy any book he wanted - even the memoir of an absolutely fabulous five-time time Tony nominee - without getting a judgmental glare.

Patti LuPone: A Memoir spent the duration of the day in his school bag, which thumped lightly against his leg as he walked from class to class. A constant reminder of his required reading -- and, of Kurt.

His feelings for Kurt had blossomed so quickly that he hadn't really had time to process. A few days ago, he was a Glee club spy. Now, he was Blaine's closest confidant. They texted each other constantly and went to shows. There was this amazing energy in the air whenever they were together. Kurt made him laugh like no one ever had. He'd never felt more comfortable around someone.

It was just as he rounded the corner into The Warblers practice room that Blaine realized he had to face facts; he was falling for Kurt Hummel. Big time.

He was early for rehearsal, having elected to skip-free period frivolity in favor of a little light reading, so he plunked down in a chair and pulled out his recent purchase. He brushed his hand lightly over the book jacket. Unknown to most people, Blaine was actually a total Bibliophile. He opened the book, cracking the spine almost immediately, and began to read. No sense in wasting time.

"Whatcha reading, dude?" Wes asked, poking his head around from behind Blaine. Apparently, he'd been so enthralled in reading that he'd not even noticed that free period had ended and Wes and David had entered the room.

"Ah, nothing," he replied looking up, afraid to close the book for fear they'd see the cover. His friends totally supported him and his sexuality, but that didn't mean they stopped acting like immature boys. He'd never hear the end of this.

"Oh no. What is it?" David asked snatching it from Blaine's hands. Wes raced around next to David to see the cover.

A great, uproarious chuckle exploded out of both of them. "Seriously, man? Patti LuPone?"

"Do you even know who she is, Wes?" Blaine asked with a sigh. "Give it back." He quickly put the book back safely in his school bag. "Kurt recommended it."

"Ooh, now you're reading books together? What's next? Tandem highlighting appointments?"

"Guys, that's enough," Blaine said crossing his arms indignantly. It was one thing for Wes and David to make fun of him, but Kurt was another story. "Leave Kurt alone."

"Damn! You have fallen hard," David said, raising his hands in surrender. "I told you, Wes. This one's for real."

"We're just kidding around man," Wes replied, slapping him on the back. "Good for you. Honestly."

It was lucky for all parties involved that the rest of The Warblers had begun to arrive. Wes and David's antics normally didn't piss him off that much. Maybe he was overreacting, but no one got to hurt Kurt. No one; not even jokingly.

Nightly homework sessions had become their most recent excuse to spend time together. They were always doing completely different work, but it didn't matter because they did it together.

"I'm gonna borrow a pen, okay?" Kurt asked, practically bounding off the bed. Before Blaine even had time to protest, Kurt had already begun digging through his school bag. He cringed, bracing himself for Kurt's discovery.

"Hey, are you re-reading Patti's book?" Kurt asked over his shoulder.

"No," he replied, surprising himself with how quickly he answered. So much for keeping up the lie. He sighed and stood to meet Kurt. "I lied to you, Kurt. And I feel horrible about it. I haven't read it yet. Well, I mean, I've started it, but I'm not done. I hadn't even picked it up the other night."

Kurt scrunched up his face into a confused expression. "But you said you ---"

"You hate me for lying to you, don't you? I wouldn't blame you. I hate it when people lie. It's awful and it does nothing but ruin relationships."

Blaine stared down at his sock-covered feet, unable to look Kurt in the eye.

"Hey. Whoa. Slow down there, mister," Kurt said, taking Blaine's wrist and trying to catch his gaze. "First of all, I doubt I am physically capable of hating you; and second, no." Kurt exhaled a small laugh.

"You're not mad?"

"No." Kurt's answer was absolutely definitive. "A little confused, but not mad."

"I just didn't want you to -- well, I mean, things have been going so great and you were so excited to talk about it. I didn't want to disappoint you."

"Blaine, can I be completely honest with you?" Kurt asked, leaning in close, his lips just inches away from Blaine's. "I think you're the most amazing person I've ever met."

Blaine bit his bottom lip as he watched Kurt try to look at both his eyes at the same time.

It was now or never. He was pretty sure he was reading the signs right. He closed his eyes and the gap between their lips.

His heart began to beat wildly when Kurt's hand migrated from his wrist to his elbow and then all the way up his arm to cup his face. Blaine tugged on Kurt's belt loops, wrapping his arms around his waist and pulling him closer yet. Kurt's lips were soft and tasted a little like Burt's Bees. For someone he knew had almost no experience kissing, Kurt sure was doing an excellent job. He knew just when to switch things up and he even managed to introduce a little tongue after an appropriate amount of time. As usual, they were completely in sync.

Eventually, they fell side by side onto Blaine's bed, both beaming and a little flushed.

"I've wanted to do that since we met," Kurt stated quietly, nestling his head against Blaine's shoulder and fiddling with the button on his shirt.

Blaine kissed the top of Kurt's head instinctively. "Me too, Kurt."

There was no more talk about lies or Patti LuPone for the rest of the night; or for many days thereafter. Just kissing, cuddling and silence intermingled with the occasional murmured assurance that what they were embarking on here was very, very good.

Blaine still absolutely despised lying, but he had to admit that he owed a great deal of gratitude to the lie that got him here, holding Kurt close to his chest and telling him how beautiful he was. Perhaps, in the morning, he'd rethink his harsh stance on lying and write Patti LuPone a thank you note.

That was so cute! I totally think Blaine was trying to impress Kurt at breadsticks. There is NO WAY they aren't going to be canon.

Why do I find Kurt calling Blaine "mister" so adorable? idek but it's great. Blaine would so be an over-the-top chivalrous kind of guy who gets uber-guilty about little white lies. But it is still sweet that he wanted to read it *for* Kurt. The last line? inspired!

You find it adorable because it totally would be.

Also, can I say that I really love your comments? So glad you're in this fandom.
